Pushing the Limits in Freediving Records
Before this, the classical men’s static apnea record was held by Stéphane Mifsud since 2009, who managed an impressive 11 minutes and 35 seconds underwater without breathing. In the oxygen-assisted category, Budimir Šobat set the mark in 2021 with 24 minutes and 37 seconds. With his new record, Maričić has raised the bar for both physical strength and mental grit.
How Oxygen-Assisted Apnea Works
To pull off such an amazing underwater stint, Maričić spent over 10 minutes breathing pure oxygen before his dive. Under the guidelines of Guinness World Records, competitors can pre-breathe pure oxygen for up to 30 minutes. This prep fills the lungs and bloodstream with oxygen and helps extend how long someone can hold their breath.
During the event, official judges from Guinness World Records were on hand to make sure every rule was followed exactly. Their careful supervision ensures that records are trustworthy and recognized worldwide.
The Physical and Mental Battle
Setting this record wasn’t just about physical training—it was a real mental challenge too. Battling intense diaphragm contractions and the overwhelming urge to breathe demands serious mental strength. As Maričić said, “After the first 20 minutes, the challenge felt more bearable mentally, despite intense diaphragm contractions.” His experience shows just how much mental toughness helps when pushing through what seems impossible.
Diving for a Cause
More than just a personal milestone, Maričić’s dive carries a message about protecting our oceans. By teaming up with groups like Sea Shepherd, he’s using his record-setting feat to support the “Fit for the Ocean” campaign, encouraging us all to think about our role in looking after marine life.
Lessons on Perseverance and Nature
Maričić’s journey teaches us a lot about sticking with our goals and showing respect for nature. His accomplishment is not only a testament to what we can achieve with dedication but also a reminder of the need to guard our planet’s oceans. While this event highlights human potential, it also calls on all of us to care for our natural world for future generations.
Celebrate Vitomir Maričić’s amazing achievement and let it remind us of our shared duty to protect our environment.
